Inventor export BIM Content fails with “Input templateFileName doesn’t exist”

December 6, 2024 Shawn Heator

Issue:

Exporting an Inventor file to BIM Content produces a dialog box that states “The export operation failed. Additional information is provided in the translation report. Would you like to view the translation report now?”.

The translation report shows the error “Input templateFileName doesn’t exist.”

Causes:

The cause of the problem is related to the Revit Interoperability component. There are many probable causes but the most common is a problem with the Revit.ini file in the Revit Interoperability folder.

Solution:

Follow the steps below to recreate the Revit.ini file.

 1.      Close all Autodesk applications.

 2.      Open File Explorer and navigate to the path below.

 C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Autodesk\Rx\Revit Interoperability 202X

*The “X” in Revit Interoperability 202X is a place holder for the year of Inventor that is having a problem. For Inventor 2024, navigate to the Revit Interoperability 2024 folder. *

 3.      Find the Revit.ini file and rename the file by adding “.old” to the file. This step will invalidate the file without deleting the file.

If you do not see a file named Revit.ini then you will need change the File Explorer View settings to “Show>File Name Extensions”. See example below.

4.      Once the Revit.ini file has been renamed, launch Inventor and attempt to export BIM Content. The secondary installer should recreate the Revit.ini file and the BIM Content should be successfully created. The images below display the successful creation dialog box along with the new Revit.ini file that is generated by the secondary installer.

If the problem continues then it may be necessary to uninstall and reinstall the Revit Interoperability component. Please contact support@rand.com for further assistance.
