Vault check-in error “This file contains linked documents…”

March 5, 2025 Shawn Heator

Issue:

Checking a Microsoft Word document (.docx) into Autodesk Vault produces a notification stating “This file contains linked documents that will not be checked in.”

Causes:

The problem is caused by linked files in the document and is under investigation by Autodesk. At this time, this issue is only known to exist for Autodesk Vault Professional 2025.

Solution:

The Microsoft Word document is still able to successfully check in and out of Vault. There currently is not a solution to prevent the notification from appearing during Vault Check-in with the current state of Vault and the Microsoft Word document.

A potential workaround is to break the links in the Word document.

  1.    Open the Word document and go to File>Info.

2.    Select “Edit Links to files” in the bottom right corner.

3.    Select all “Source Files” and then select “Break Link”.

This workaround may prevent the notification from appearing. Alternatively, removing the files with a “link” from the document and replacing with an embedded image should prevent the notification.

Since this issue is currently under investigation by Autodesk, this blog will be updated when additional information about this problem is released.
