How to add additional shapes to Advance Steel Hang off rails

August 26, 2021 Shawn Heator

Issue:

Railings in Advance Steel supports many different shapes for the post, handrail, and middle rails, but for the hang off rails Advance Steel on supports pipe, flat, and round bar. In some case a manufacture may use a square or rectangular tubbing for the hang off rail and these shapes are not an option out of the box.

Railings in Advance Steel support many different shapes for the Post, Handrail, and Middle rails, but for the Hang off rails Advance Steel only supports Pipe, Flat, and Round bar. In some cases a manufacturer may use a square or rectangular tubbing for the hang off rail and these shapes are not an option out of the box.

Solution:

To add the shapes, we need to search for the Sub Type Name and the associate the Sub Type Name value to the hang off rail shape list. To add to the list can be modified using Microsoft SQL server management studio or in Advance Steel Management Tools. In this article we will use Management Tools on the home tab in Advance Steel.

To add these shapes, we need to search for the Sub Type Name and then associate the Sub Type Name value to the hang off rail shape list. We can add to the list by using Microsoft SQL server management studio or Advance Steel Management Tools. In this article we will use Management Tools on the home tab in Advance Steel.

I would add periods to the end of each sentence

  1. Open Management Tools on the home tab
  2. Select Table editor and click open installed database
  3. Expand the AstorProfiles and navigate to ProfileMasterTable
  4. Click on the ProfileMasterTable and search for the shape to be added to the hang off rail (in this example we will use AISC14_HSS_Square)
  5. Slide the horizontal slider to the right until the column SubTypeName display. Write down the value display in this column “H”
  6. Expand AstorRules and scroll down and select JointsGUIAllowedSections
  7. Scroll down to number 31 and 32, write down the values in each column. (JointName – RailingNew, JointControl  - GrabRail, AllowedSectionType – Section shape, and we will replace AllowedSection with “H”)
  8. Scroll down to the bottom of the list and after Key number 8053 we will add 8054 for the key and JointName – RailingNew, JointControl  - GrabRail, AllowedSectionType – Section shape, and AllowedSection – H, then enter to add the new line.

  1. Close Management Tools and select Update defaults for the changes to take effect. Sometimes this does not update the database and we need to exit the software and re-open Advance Steel for the database to update.

  1. Now the Hang off rail will display the HSS square and rectangular shapes
