Migrate Workspace forward from older Civil 3D to Newer Version

November 10, 2020 Ryan Wunderlich

In the process below, I will be using Civil 3D 2021 as my older version and 2024 as the newer version, you can do this with any version to any other version

  1. Open C3D 2021 and Save your current C3D workspace:
    1. Open C3D 2021
    2. Navigate to the Workspace gear (lower left of C3D) and click the arrow on the right and click Save Current As..:
    3. Select Civil 3D and Save, and overwrite the current workspace:
    4. Now, Type in CUI and open the CUI Editor
    5. Click on the Transfer Tab
    6. Left mouse click and Drag the Civil 3D Default (current) under Workspaces from the left pane and place it in the Workspaces on the right pane
    7. Now click the Save icon in the right pane and save the CUIX as C3D 2021 Workspace, somewhere where you can retrieve it in 2024.
  2. Now to transfer that workspace into 2024
    1. Open Civil 3D 2024
    2. Set the workspace to anything but Civil 3D (we are replacing Civil 3D)
    3. Once in the selected workspace, type in CUI to open the CUI Editor
    4. In the Workspaces right mouse click on Civil 3D Default and select Delete
    5. Click on the Transfer Tab
    6. Click on the Open folder in the right pane and navigate to the saved file from 1g above:
    7. Now click and drag the Civil 3D from the right pane to the left pane
    8. Now click on the Customize Tab and confirm that Civil 3D is now there, right mouse click on it and select Set Default
    9. Click Apply and then Click OK to close the CUI Editor
    10. Now select Civil 3D from the Workspace, and confirm it’s the same workspace you are used to.
  3. There are a few items that are controlled by the registry (usually exported to an arg file), like crosshair size, colors, and other system variables, so there will be a few things to turn back on or other changes you will need to make to get both the older version and newer one to look the same.
    1. Once you have turned on the things you want navigate to the Workspace gear (lower left of C3D) and click the arrow on the right and click Save Current As..:
    2. Select Civil 3D and Save, and overwrite the current workspace:
    3. That should be all to migrate the preferred workspace to 2024 from 2021.
