How to correctly update AutoCAD based Vertical Programs

November 23, 2020 Ryan Wunderlich

A common issue we see in Support is that people are not updating their AutoCAD Based software correctly (this includes all the vertical products like Map 3D, Civil 3D, AutoCAD Architecture, AutoCAD MEP, Plant 3D, AutoCAD Mechanical and AutoCAD Electrical).

What we typically see is users updating only the vertical component (for example updating Civil 3D 2024 with the 2024.3 update, but not updating the AutoCAD component), and your software begins to behave in odd manners or you now suddenly start to have errors or crashing.

This is because when you install any of the vertical products above, the AutoCAD Core engine is also installed and many of the functions in your vertical rely on base AutoCAD to perform functions, so unless you update the AutoCAD Core engine, these issues will continue to persist.  In rare cases, you cannot install an update to a vertical until you've updated the AutoCAD Core engine.

When installing/applying updates to your Autodesk software, always start and install all AutoCAD Updates before selecting any of the program specific ones.

For example, when updating Civil 3D run these updates in this order:
AutoCAD only updates
Civil 3D specific updates
Map 3D Updates (because Civil 3D includes Map 3D functionality)

In the case of the other verticals:
AutoCAD only updates
AutoCAD Architecture/MEP/Electrical/Plant 3D/etc. updates

This will ensure you have the correct patch levels on all the software and this will ensure fewer issues later.

If the Desktop App doesn't appear to be working, then manually download and install using your Autodesk account:
