Issue:
Civil 3D: Survey database cannot be edited.

When trying to edit a Survey Database in Civil 3D. You find it cannot be edited and has a odd symbol to the left of the Survey Database Name. (See Figure 1)

Figure 1

Causes:

  • Read Only File
  • Read Only Folder
  • Read Only drive.
  • Unsupported Operating system

Solution:

  • Read Only File
  1. Right click on the file and select properties.
  2. Select the General Tab.
  3. Uncheck Read Only.
  4. Select OK.

Note:
File is normally found in the Survey Database Working Folder.
Right click the Survey database Name at the top of the Survey Tab.
Select set Working Folder.
The Folder that opens is where the Database is located.

  • Read Only Folder
  1. Right click on the folder and select properties.
  2. Select the General Tab.
  3. Uncheck Read Only.
  4. Select OK.
  • Read Only drive
  1. Check with IT regarding rights.

Unsupported Operating system:
Things like NAS Drives, Cloud Servers, etc are unsupported. This is due the fact that these have their own technology that Autodesk cannot support. Contact the Vendor and discuss File Locking with them. You should be able to get this working in most cases via the Manufacturers method.
