Revit 2024.3 update possible issue

November 15, 2024 Gregory Lee

Issue:

After updating to Revit 2024.3, users may encounter several issues:

1.     File Opening Errors: Users might experience difficulty opening files, receiving an error message indicating that Revit cannot access the model.

2.     Rollback Limitation: Once Revit 2024.3 is installed, a rollback to previous versions is not possible, even after a clean uninstall, resulting in a Revit.exe error.

3.     Random User Locking: Instances where random users lock the project file, preventing others from syncing to the central file. The journal file may contain lines like:

'C 02-Oct-2024 10:09:43.544;  DBG_INFO: No record for element 13475765 in PermissionsCache: line 133 of E:\Ship24.1.1\2024_px64\Source\DataStorage\CloudClientInterop\ModelAccessProvider\ModelPermissionAdapter.cpp.

Causes:

1.     File Corruption Sensitivity: It seems Revit 2024.3 has a lower tolerance for certain families, which may cause file corruption. Users on Revit 2024.2 can open these files without issues, while those on 2024.3 may be locked out.

2.     Registry Changes with Update: Revit 2024.3 installation modifies the registry, adding entries that prevent the reinstallation of Revit 2024.2. This results in the Revit.exe error during rollback attempts.

3.     Manager Add-ins: Some add-ins, especially those related to content management, appear to cause random user locking issues, blocking the ability to sync with the central file.

Solution:

Issue #1: Currently, no direct fix exists for the file opening error in Revit 2024.3. Users on Revit 2024.2 can try to identify problematic elements through a manual process:

Manual Purging: The Revit 2024.2 user needs to purge elements one by one from the Project Browser to isolate the problematic element. Although time-consuming, this method helps identify the source of the corruption.

Issue #2: To resolve the rollback issue, use the Autodesk Uninstaller tool before performing a clean uninstall. Follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Autodesk folder located at C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\Uninstallers.
  2. Open the Autodesk Revit 2024.3 Update folder and run AdskUninstallHelper.exe.
  3. Open the Autodesk Revit 2024.2.1 Update folder and run AdskUninstallHelper.exe.
  4. Open the Autodesk Revit 2024.2.0 Update folder and run AdskUninstallHelper.exe.
  5. Open the Autodesk Revit 2024 folder and run AdskUninstallHelper.exe.

Issue #3: To resolve random user locking of the project file:

Uninstall Content Catalog Add-ins: Removing these add-ins appears to prevent users from inadvertently locking the central file, restoring the ability for others to sync.

Recommendation:

Given these issues, it is advisable to delay updating to Revit 2024.3 until a more stable solution is available or an official announcement is provided by Autodesk.
