Custom AutoCAD 2023 base ARG in a Deployment using a default Profile fails

March 14, 2023 Jeff Lotan

Issue:
You have included a custom profile in your AutoCAD deployment, and it didn’t work.

The product installs, but the customization is missing.

Example:
You modify the out of the box “<<Unnamed Profile>>” profile.

You Export that profile and include it in your 2023 Custom Install deployment using the Browse button.
Once the deployment is created you verify you see the custom .arg file in the deployment subfolder.

You install from the batch file but you do not get an extra shortcut icon on the desktop with your custom profile.

Causes:

"Custom Install" fails to include customization when you modify a default / out of the box Profile and save it to include with your deployment.

Since the internal name in the custom Profile already exists as the default profile, it uses the default settings.

When you edit the .arg file in notepad you will see many lines with the “<<Unnanmed Profile>>” profile name in it:

You could edit them all, but it may be difficult getting all of them and making sure there are no typos.  It may not be reliable.

Solution:

To work around this limitation
1)    In AutoCAD in Options>Profiles tab click the “Add to List…” button and give your new profile name. In our example I’m using “IMAGINiT Technologies Default”.  once added, click “Set Current”.

2)    Modify the new profile to use the settings you need.
3)    Click the “Export…” button and save it where it will be easy to get to.

4)    Edit the deployment and browse to and select the “IMAGINiT Technologies Default.arg” file.  You may be able to rename the existing profile within the deployment and paste the new one in and rename it to what had been imported already.  It should work as long as the internal name is different.

In the deployment folder find your custom .arg file.  Example:  Move the original .arg out of the folder and save the new “IMAGINiT Technologies Default.arg” into the same folder, then try installing again using the batch file.

There should be a new shortcut icon on the desktop with the profile name in it.
