Autodesk Vault SQL Replication Snapshot Folder Size Is Excessive

June 30, 2023 Heath White

Issue:

In a multi-site Vault environment, the admin noticed that the SQL snapshot folder was getting larger, in this case it was almost a terabyte in size, and the continued growth was not in line with normal replication behavior.  This had been going on for quite some time and had begun interfering with other applications by taking up a large portion of the server free space.

Causes:

The SQL instance had a SQL maintenance plan in place and functioning.  Even though the maintenance plan was running the snapshots were stacking up instead of old snapshots being cleared out. It turned out that the ‘distribution clean up’ task was failing every time and it showed a permissions error on the ‘knowledgevaultmaster_adms’ folder as the task was running as a user that did not have “Full Control” for the replication share folder and all subfolders.  The error also showed for ‘vault_adms’ and would likely show for any other replicated database folder.

Solution:

The solution in this case was to ensure that the SQL agent user and the Replication user (if they are different) have full control of the Replication Share and all subfolders so that any tasks that need to be performed can do so without restrictions.

It is worth noting that making those specific changes to the security of the folders is not normally part of the steps called out in the set-up recommendations.
