Autodesk Inventor Apprentice failed to load on Get-Checkout from Vault

March 28, 2023 Heath White

Issue:
When performing a “Get/Checkout” from within the Vault Thick Client you receive a message stating “Unable to update file references.”  If you expand the details section, you will see the additional error that “Inventor Apprentice failed to load.”

Causes:
This problem can be due to a range of factors, and you may need to try a variety of troubleshooting steps to determine the exact cause. In this article we will look at one of the most common causes and solutions.

In the situation addressed in this article, the problem was due a security setting that prevented users from accessing a required file.

Solution:

In this scenario the issue was resolved by restoring access to the components that had been obsoleted. As a general rule, you should not keep parts/subassemblies which are restricted, included in an assembly that users will still access. It is best not only to ensure that all files referenced by a Released file are Released as well, but also to ensure that a Released file is not calling on an Obsolete file which can cause additional issues.

One way to accomplish this without as much manual oversight is to check the settings for Lifecycle Transitions into Released states. There are options available to help prevent files from being released if those criteria are not met.

This can also be caused by some of the subcomponents being assigned to a Lifecycle that is only accessible to some users. The errors messages do not indicate the specific cause only a general issue, so additional troubleshooting steps may be required.

If the steps above do not resolve the issue, please see the following resources for additional suggestions for resolving the issue.
