3D view takes too long to open or crashes Revit

Issue:

Opening a 3D view in Revit takes a long time, and when the view is loaded, it appears to work normally.

Also, trying to print a sheet containing the view(s), leads to reduced performance, hang-ups, or may even cause Revit to crash.

Causes:

There is one or more missing render appearance image link from a material within the project.
The following line will be recorded in the Revit journal file:

DBG_INFO: RevitPathResolver can't find proper path. Problem with path <PATH>\<FILENAME>

Revit's material asset library is stored by default in this location C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Autodesk Shared\Materials\2023\assetlibrary_base.adsklib so each time you open Revit it reads that folder to interpret material assets. If you use a non-Revit material asset, or a custom library, they will not be available when the referenced file location is moved, or the Revit model is copied to another computer that doesn't contain the custom library or referenced material.

Solutions:

Restore missing render appearance image.
Replace or remove missing render appearance image.

Restore missing render appearance image.

  1. If the path to the missing image referenced in the journal file exists on your local machine, find a copy of the missing image, and place it in the location listed.
  2. If the path to the missing image referenced in the journal file does not exist on your local machine, you can create a new location for it on your local machine and add it to Additional render appearance paths.
  • Go to File>Options>Rendering
  • Click on the green +  button to add the new render image location.
  • If Revit is unable to find a location specified for a render image file using the absolute path, it will search in the location(s) specified in this list, in the order in which the paths are listed.

Replace or remove missing render appearance image.

You may wish to change the render appearance image file or jettison it, first you must locate the missing image in the material browser.
Go to the 'manage' tab in Revit and open the material browser. You can manage the search by changing your view to show you only materials in use/unused (useful if you do not wish to purge unused materials).

Use one of the following options to resolve the issue:

1.    Click on the missing image icon to open the texture editor, and manually specify a new render appearance image,

2.    Replace with a generic material asset - Open the Asset Browser, search for a suitable material asset and used the replace button to substitute the material.

3.    Remove the render appearance image – You can use the dropdown button beside the image icon to remove the missing image.

In cases where the path is correct but still shows missing asset, simply reload it by clicking on the missing image preview in the Material Browser where the RED warning is located, the texture editor dialog box will appear, click on the image file name, the file path location will open with the selected jpeg image name highlighted, once you click "OPEN" the image will be reloaded.
