Civil 3D: Skewed Profile Structure Labels when Dragged

April 3, 2023 Leo Lavayen

The label behaves as intended when created and the dimension grip edited:

As shown, the created Pipe Network > Default Profile Label Placement are configured so that the Dimension Anchor Option for Structures is set to “Above”.  And Dimension Anchor Plot Height Value for Structure is set to for a 1.5”.  The Structure Label Placement is set to “At Top of Structure

The applied structure label is configured to work in Profile Views.  With a line component that starts at “Label Location” and ends at “Structure Dimension” (set to an offset 1.5”).  Note the label shown below has been dragged from:

The label behaves as intended when using the Label dimension anchor (diamond grip) is dragged vertically (up/down).  The image below left is dragged up; and to the right left at its default location.

THE ISSUE:
The label misbehaves when the Move Point Being Labeled (square grip) is dragged laterally (left/right).  Note below how the labels become skewed even though the Dragged State display has been set to “As Composed

This was working a while back, however when tested it misbehaves from the current 2023 release all the way back to 2018.

THE WORKAROUND:
Have not been able to find a fix for this, however, did figure out a different configuration that worked well.  It starts by changing the Pipe Network > Default Profile Label Placement are configuration.  So that the Dimension Anchor Option for Structures is set to “Graph view top”, and the Dimension Anchor Plot Hight Value for Structure is set to 0.1”.  The Structure Label Placement is kept “At Top of Structure”.  The label then by default shoot up to the TOP line of the profile view (as seen below):

The structure label behaves as intended when dragging the Label dimension anchor (diamond grip) from its original location vertically (up/down).  As well as when the Move Point Being Labeled (square grip) is dragged laterally (left/right).

This alteration in configuration may cause some getting used to, but it ensures that the base composition of the label is followed in its default state and when dragged.

Also wanted to share an older Structure Label post detailing the use of the “Dimension” value that you might find interesting:  civil-3d-making-the-most-of-pipe-setting
