Inventor Bolted Connection Failed to create a hole with iParts

Issue:

When creating and placing a Bolted Connection in Autodesk Inventor, the Bolted Connection preview appears with the desired results, but an error occurs when applying the selection. The errors state an “Unexpected error during bolted connection execution” and “Failed to create a hole”.

Causes:

While there may be a variety of causes, if you are using iParts then the error is a product of iPart limitations.

Solution:

There is not a solution to using Bolted Connections with an iPart when the holes are generated in the iPart factory members. With iParts, the holes are features of the iPart member. The holes do not actually exist until the member is generated.

Another way to understand Bolted Connection limitations is to review the behavior from an Assembly level. Bolted Connections have a limitation that requires holes to be directly in the part. Per Autodesk, “Holes are drilled into parts, not into assembly holes. So, the bolted connection generator does not drill into holes created in the assembly environment, only into holes created in the part environment.”

Using the above information to relate to Bolted Connections, trying to use a Bolted Connection with an iPart is like trying to add a Bolted Connection to Assembly level holes. Bolted Connections can only be added on the part level.
