Inventor 2023: Orbit randomly slow

Issue:

In Inventor 2023 some users report that starting the 3D Orbit command using SHIFT+ middle-mouse button can briefly lock up the program.

Causes:

Pivot point changes made to the 3D Orbit command in Inventor 2023 can randomly cause this to occur based on the model and position in the graphics window.

It’s not possible to change this new model rotation behavior:

Solution:

  • To prevent this you can try starting the Orbit command from the Navigation bar instead of SHIFT+ middle-mouse button:

  • Or center the model in the graphics windows before starting the Orbit command.

See Autodesk's reference article on the reported issue:

The Inventor 2023.4 update includes the option to disable the new pivot point ; a Windows registry key can be added to allow the use of legacy orbit behavior:

Warning! Problems caused by improperly editing the Windows registry could render your computer/operating system unusable. Microsoft provides a wealth of critical information that you need to know about the registry in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.  Use the Microsoft® Registry Editor only at your own risk and only after backing up the registry as well as the system.dat and user.dat files as outlined for your operating system in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.  Additional information about the registry is also contained in the Help topics in the Microsoft Registry Editor.
