Issue:
Inventor will automatically enter the Inventor Nesting environment when attempting to import a .stp file instead of entering the Assembly environment.
Causes:
Inventor Nesting is an add-in application for Inventor Professional. This issue will only occur if Inventor Nesting is installed, and the Template folder does not contain a “Standard.iam” template.
Solution:
The default Inventor templates are labeled as “Standard” and the default location is in the Public Documents folder.

If your Template folder does not contain a standard Assembly template (Standard.iam) then Inventor defaults to the “Standard.inest” file. The “Standard.inest” file is the Inventor Nesting Template. Inventor will also default to the Nesting Environment if you use the Quick Access>New file>Assembly without a “Standard.iam” file present in the Template folder.
The Template folder is defined in your Inventor Project file. To check if you are missing the default “Standard.iam” folder in your defined Template folder, go to the Get Started Tab to select Projects.
Find your active Project file and expand Folder Options. The example below shows the active project Vault has the Template folder defined as in the default location.
The Template location may also be defined on the File tab in Applications options.
Unless your default Template location has been modified, the default location should have a Standard.iam file. If your defined Template folder does not contain a “Standard.iam” then you can copy Standard.iam from the default location and paste into your Template folder to resolve the problem.
Once a “Standard.iam” template is present in the Template folder then Inventor will be able to properly import a .stp file. This issue has been reported to Autodesk development. Updates should appear in the Autodesk link below as they are released.
