Working with a client recently, got into something I thought was common knowledge: the ability to use alternate unit formats in subassemblies.
Every subassembly is configured differently and will default to its format when a raw number is typed into the field. However, we can dictate the use of an alternate format, let’s see some examples below:
Slope or Grade - Percent (%) vs Run:Rise (X:1)
In the DAYLIGHT subassembly below, the default the input is slope as Run:Rise (X:1). If the input was 3, it is shown in as 3:1 in the field.
If we were wanted to use percent (%) as an alternate unit, we must type in the additional syntax. If the input was 25%, Civil 3D will convert it and show 4:1.

Distance or Depth - Foot (‘) vs Inches (“)
In the PAVEMENT subassembly below, the default format for width is feet (‘). If the input was 12, it is shown in as 12.00’ in the field.
If we wanted to use inches (“) an alternate unit, we must type in. If the input was 120”, Civil 3D will convert it and show 10’ .

Here only 2 examples are shown, but the idea can be applied to all the subassemblies that ship with Civil 3D. I encourage you to test this format switch method.
