Reassign Vault Gateway Administration

December 22, 2023 Heath White

Issue:

You need to change the account that administers the Vault Gateway.

However, when you try to sign in, you get the following message.

Causes:

In the instances we’ve come across, this has been related to account changes where the account that was set up as the service account for the Gateway was changed and is no longer an administrator. This hasn’t always been the case, so regardless of the root cause, once you begin to get this message you will have difficulty accessing the Gateway administration tools.

Solution:

What we’ve found that has resolved the issue in multiple instances has been to change the service account as mentioned in the following article:

https://www.autodesk.com/support/technical/article/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/How-to-change-the-Service-Account-used-for-Vault-Gateway-configuration.html

That being said, in the instances when that has not been an option using the steps in the following article has allowed us to access the administrative settings for the Gateway so that a different service account could be used:

https://www.autodesk.com/support/technical/article/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/How-to-delete-a-Vault-Gateway-when-you-no-longer-have-access-to-the-Vault-Server.html

In one instance we did need to delete the existing Gateway so a new one could be created.  In that case the admin also had to perform one additional step as indicated below:

Go to the registry and rename the KEY:

 “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Autodesk\PLM\Vault Gateway”

To

 “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Autodesk\PLM\Old_Vault Gateway”

As a reminder, any time you edit the registry, it is recommended that you export the key(s) to be edited prior to making any changes in case you need to restore the settings due to undesirable results.

Warning! Problems caused by improperly editing the Windows registry could render your computer/operating system unusable. Microsoft provides a wealth of critical information that you need to know about the registry in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.  Use the Microsoft® Registry Editor only at your own risk and only after backing up the registry as well as the system.dat and user.dat files as outlined for your operating system in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.  Additional information about the registry is also contained in the Help topics in the Microsoft Registry Editor.
