Sharing Civil 3D Data with Autodesk Docs and BIM Collaborate Pro

Successful civil projects rely on collaborative, connected teams and this collaboration spans internal teams across disciplines or multiple subcontractors. Today, teams often work from different locations, including separate offices or remote setups due to hybrid employment models, even across different countries.

Autodesk Construction Cloud, which includes Autodesk Docs and BIM Collaborate Pro, makes it easy for teams to create a common data environment in the cloud, share Civil 3D data, and work more efficiently on projects.

Streamlined Project and Document Management
Autodesk Docs forms the foundation of the Autodesk Construction Cloud and an organization’s common data environment. It enables teams to:

•    Manage 2D and 3D designs. All multi-discipline models can be published and aggregated in a single folder to enable automated clash detection.

•    Link files as references. Teams can attach documents as references to RFIs, meetings, forms, and assets to improve collaboration and reduce miscommunication.

•    Centralize issue management. Autodesk Docs enables effortless tracking and resolution of quality issues across teams from a single, centralized issue list.

•    Organization turnover documentation. Teams can generate accurate, comprehensive turnover documentation in a single click for an up-to-date record and hard copy of a project.

Autodesk Docs offers document versioning, markups, approvals, dashboards and more. Team members don’t need AutoCAD to review information – they can use the Autodesk Docs’ powerful web viewer to access different files. This viewer supports over 85 different file types.

Permissions and security in Autodesk Docs ensure that the right people have access to the right project information. Automatic file locking is essential when teams work in the cloud and have data cached locally. Autodesk Docs keeps files locked until users have fully transferred them to the cloud.

More Efficient Design Collaboration and Coordination
BIM Collaborate Pro provides a single source of project truth and uses simple automation, end-to-end communication, and team accountability to speed up the design process. It offers automated clash detection, aggregated model communication, issue management, and more.

When it comes to data sharing and collaboration for Civil 3D projects, Autodesk offers tools that help teams with three common scenarios:

1.    Fast, reliable connections to the cloud. Autodesk Desktop Connector is a data pipeline that understands and preserves design intent for collaborators in the Autodesk ecosystem. This solution is optimized for cloud-hosted projects, supports Microsoft Cloud Files APIs, and offers faster open speeds. The Desktop Connector user interface offers a traditional file storage look and feel. This prevents disruptions to current workflows and minimizes the learning curve for users. Built-in file management capabilities include conflict resolution, automatic read-only notifications, and native file locking regardless of application.

2.    Managing, organizing, and delivering construction drawings to the extended project team. Autodesk Sheet Set Manager for Web displays and manages named collections of drawing sheets stored in Autodesk Docs. This functionality is available with Autodesk Civil 3D 2023.1 or later. Team members can collaborate on the same cloud sheet set and load sheet set information from DST files into Sheet Set Manager for Web. Team members can also see changes to the sheet set in the Sheet Set Manager tree view.

3.    Whole project support, including project files other than dwg. Autodesk Bridge is part of Autodesk Construction Cloud. It enables teams to share information across projects, improving collaboration, reducing rework, and enabling better control and management of project information. Bridging to another project, for example, allows teams to easily share sheets and files, as well as set up and manage automated sheet sharing. With Bridge, disconnecting users and removing automations at the end of a project is a simple, one-click process.
