Exporting Civil 3D to Navisworks

There are times for model coordination that an AutoCAD Civil 3D file needs to be brought in to Navisworks. The process for this is fairly straight forward, as long as the exporter is installed.

There are a couple of different ways to bring your Civil 3D information in to Navisworks. The easiest is to use the exporter.

Type NWC out in the command line. This will bring up a save dialog box asking where to save the NWC file.

If Civil 3D returns an “Unknown Command” first check to see if the exporter has been installed. Instructions for doing so can be found at the following link:

Once the NWC file has been saved it can be opened in Navisworks.

The NWC file that is created within Civil 3D will bring over any Civil 3D or AutoCAD objects that are displayed within Civil 3D including XREF’s and data references. This makes choosing what you want to see in Navisworks very easy as you can turn off or hide any unwanted objects.
