Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Facility Management: Unlocking Value with Connected Data

BIM forms the foundation of digital transformation in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry. The value of BIM isn’t limited only to the design and construction phases of a building, however.

Facility Management and the Value of BIM

BIM helps facility managers understand building assets through data like 3D design models, material specifications, equipment details, floor plans, performance data, and more. Bringing relevant BIM data into facility management systems can help organizations in several ways, such as reducing maintenance costs, optimizing asset utilization through data tracking, managing available space, and more.

A 2023 survey conducted by Autodesk and the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) found that BIM for facility operations is on the rise, with nearly one-third (32%) of respondents indicating that they already use BIM to support facility operations at one or more facilities.

Overcoming “Fear of BIM”

  3. Configuration. Common tasks include modifying database table structures, standardizing workflows, integrating the facilities management system with other systems, adding reports, and more.
  4. Training. This can be conducted in-person or online. Topics are tailored to each organization’s needs, data, and system configurations.
  5. Evaluation and Support. This final phase confirms that the project met expectations and presents support options for continued success.
